Armenia’s EU membership incompatible with EAEU membership, bloc says
Armenia cannot be a member of both the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union, the Russian government’s press service said. The issue was examined in a report on the possible consequences of suspending Armenia’s participation in the EAEU.
Members of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council representing Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan presented the report. It was prepared in response to discussions on EU integration initiated by Armenia. The document will be submitted to the leaders of the bloc’s member states.
The report’s authors examined the legal frameworks of the EU and the EAEU to assess their compatibility. According to the position set out in the document, Armenia would breach its obligations under the EAEU treaty by complying with the rules for joining the European Union. If that happens, the countries that presented the report would be entitled to consider suspending Armenia’s participation in the bloc.
