Armenia weighs options for a new nuclear power unit

Armenia’s Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, David Khudatyan, said on October 23, 2026, that the country was discussing options for building a new nuclear power unit.

Armenia considers both small and large nuclear power units

Armenia is interested in both small nuclear power units and conventional large-scale facilities, Khudatyan said. The minister cited the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant as an example.

Khudatyan also raised the possibility of building a higher-capacity nuclear power plant in the country. He did not specify its potential specifications.

Armenia’s criteria for choosing a nuclear power plant

Armenia is discussing the construction of a nuclear power plant with several countries. According to Khudatyan, these discussions are taking place independently of the meeting with the American delegation.

Proposals will be assessed on how well they fit Armenia’s energy system and their affordability given the country’s financial resources. The authorities will announce a final decision once it has been made; no specific option has yet been announced.
